Amprion starts approval process for BalWin1 and BalWin2 onshore cable sectionsAmprion has begun the approval process for the onshore cable routes of the BalWin1 and BalWin2 offshore grid connections on two sections totalling around 92 kilometres between Bösel in the district of Cloppenburg and the border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony. The company has submitted planning approval applications to the state authority and will hold an online information session on 8 January 2026.

BalWin1 and BalWin2 will link offshore wind farms in the North Sea to the onshore German transmission network. From the coast, both systems follow a parallel route to the southern end of the Alfsee before separating. BalWin2 then continues alone towards Ibbenbüren in North Rhine-Westphalia. The route between Bösel and the Alfsee forms approval section 2, while the section from the Alfsee to the state border forms section 3. Amprion has finalised plans for both sections and filed the relevant applications with the Lower Saxony State Authority for Road Construction and Transport. An application for the final northern section from the coast to Bösel is expected in the coming weeks.

The planning documents will be available for public inspection from 11 December 2025 to 10 January 2026 for section 3, and from 16 December 2025 to 15 January 2026 for section 2, both at the authority and online. Comments may be submitted until 26 January 2026 for section 3 and 29 January 2026 for section 2.

Amprion will outline the project and the approval process during a digital information event on 8 January 2026 at 18:00. Construction of the onshore cable route is planned to start between late 2026 and early 2027.
